Introduction to CASEL's Framework:

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) provides a comprehensive framework to guide on what to expect from learners. You can read more about CASEL at casel.org.

This framework is built around five key competencies:

  1. Internal Competencies:

    • Self-Awareness: Recognizing and understanding one's emotions, thoughts, and influences.

    • Self-Management: Effectively handling and expressing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

  2. External Competencies:

    • Social Awareness: Gaining insight into others' feelings and perspectives and showing empathy.

    • Relationship Skills: Developing and maintaining supportive relationships and effectively interacting with diverse individuals.

    • Responsible Decision-Making: Making thoughtful and caring choices in various situations.

While each competency targets specific behaviors that are unique and do not overlap, broader soft skills often span multiple competencies. For instance, "Accepting Criticism" is relevant to Self-Awareness and Self-Management.
